You may notice little spider veins (also called telangiectasias) appearing on your legs over time. These veins aren’t typically painful or itchy, and can be removed for cosmetic reasons. Spider veins are often an inherited trait, but pregnancy, hormonal changes, and immobility can exacerbate them. Women typically have more visible spider veins than men do, and may notice them appearing in their 20s and 30s.
Both laser and injection (sclerotherapy) treatments can target spider veins, but sclerotherapy is the superior method for treatment in the legs. When compared to laser treatment, sclerotherapy typically requires fewer sessions, leads to quicker resolutions, is less painful, more affordable, and has less risk of hyperpigmentation.
Sclerotherapy is an effective non-surgical way to eliminate visible surface veins. It consists of a series of injections of a special medication (sclerosant) into the vein, which damages and scars the inside lining of the vein, causing it to collapse and permanently close. Once a vein collapses, it essentially reabsorbs into local tissue and fades with time.
Unfortunately, we do not treat varicose veins or deeper vein with sclerotherapy as it is not an effective treatment.
Procedure: Sclerotherapy is done in the clinic and does not require anesthesia. It involves a number of tiny injections, according to the size and number of veins. Most patients find the injections minimally uncomfortable – like a pinprick.
Average Cost: starting at $399.00 per session dependent upon type of vessels.
Length of Procedure: each session takes about 30-45 minutes.
Treatment Frequency: it typically requires 2-4 treatment sessions, depending on your individual needs. However, even one treatment can noticeably clear up the redness and visibility of spider veins on legs. Touch ups will be required from time to time as new veins become dilated and visible.
Duration of Results: permanent; however, sclerotherapy does not prevent new veins from appearing.
Recovery Time: sclerotherapy does not require downtime for recovery, so you don't have to take time off work or leisure. Moderate exercise in 24 hours. Depending on the location and size of vein injected, we apply a compression pad, and during recovery, you'll have to wear compression stockings for 5 days.
Risks: bruising is normal and will fade in 2-3 weeks; pigmentation changes.
Contraindications: pregnancy or breastfeeding, severely impaired mobility, a personal history of blood clots or a bleeding disorder, allergy to sclerosing agents.
